Paleofied

We have all gone back and forth about paleofying foods like muffins, pancakes, cookies, etc on here and I'm totally guilty of doing that. I read two "articles" today against this that are worth the read if you have time.

1. From Whole09, it's almost worth skipping the article and reading the comments. Several people slam Mark Sisson and are calling him a sell out because of his protein powder and the ingredients.

I see their point, let's not complicate this paleo lifestyle anymore and eat meat and veg and go back to basics. But, like I have said before, what if you have a paleo muffin that doesn't use agave, honey, etc twice a week? It's the question that will never be answered I guess.

  1. Good links. I think the danger in paleo-fying foods is for people who are not as informed in their food choices as say you. For example, many people "binge" on diet soda or 100 cal snack packs b/c they think these things are "healthy." IMO the danger is in the dose. As long as the ingredients are paleo, you do it in moderation and understand the impact of what you are eating it's A-OK. In my book anyway....

  2. @Yaz... Great point I totally agree!

    For me, it was breaking the connections with common comfort meals. My problem is that I have a nasty addiction with food and I kept trying to justify non-paleo items in my head. Just taking these things out completely helped me break those associations and now it is much easier for me to just use a paleo-matrix (a chart broken down into acceptable PRO/CHO/FAT and basically I choose one from each category) for cooking.

    It isn't about trying to eat exactly like our paleolithic ancestors but rather being aware of what the effects of the foods are on our bodies. "Paleofied" cookies, pancakes, muffins and the like are generally constructed with several different fats (ground nuts & oil) and use fruits and eggs for binders. I look at it this way... it may have Paleo PRO/CHO/FAT but it is in the wrong proportions to make a meal for me. This is where it gets a little more into zoning (which really helped me understand portions and proportions) and using that zoned paleo to lean out (though I ate paleo freely during the last challenge I think these lessons seeped in).

    My real weakness is ice cream... so when I'm not on a challenge I keep a pint of SO Coconut Milk Ice cream in the freezer. I'm not particularly in love with it so it is easy for me to just take one spoonful and curb the craving. However, I recently tried the SO Coconut Purely Decadent in the Cherry Amaretto flavor. It is soooo delicious I don't think I am going to buy it again.

    Or did you put something like this together yourself. I was always "bored" with eating paleo the last 6 weeks but he says by following this matrix, you should never be bored. Interesting either way.

    Also, try the SO Coconut Mint Chocolate Chip, it's really good, at least I think so.

  4. Ashley, Wolf's concept behind the matrix is that so many combinations exist it is hard to eat the same thing twice in 3 to 6 months. What is making you bored?

  5. What does SO stand for re the ice creams? Food matrix looks interesting. I can already envision a bunch of different combos!

    Question re tomotoes - I know they are technically a fruit and a nightshade - but what is the paleo position on them?

  6. SO means the ice cream is so/so. :) Not sure Yaz, google that shiz.

    Day, I'm not bored anymore, I was just eating so much that I think I got bored with eating the same snacks, fruits, same meatballs etc. But, I've cut that shit out this week and I feel great, not hungry, not starving and am okay.

    What I like about this whole paleo evolution thing is that I am always learning things and then can re-evaluate my plan, like in his recent podcast someone had a question about prolactin and MEN1, which is what I have and it was so great to hear him say what I should avoid, which are nightshades, eggs, nuts, seeds. My diet is getting more back to basic the more I learn which I am hoping makes things a lot easier in the long run.

  7. Yup... I started with Robb Wolf's version (right after I went to his seminar last year) and changed it up as I went along. If I reacted poorly to a certain food I took it off... if I heard of something new (paleo) I put it on.

    I've heard a lot of reasons to take nightshades out of my diet. Ugh... sadly I just can't bring myself to do it (try it at least).

    We all need to rally and get Mr. Wolf to visit Chicago. I want to take the OPT seminars too... I promised myself I wouldn't add any more expenses until I got a job though :(

  8. OH... and the SO Coconut products are super yummy. I really like the yogurt too! I think they shortened "soy" and that continued to their other products even if they didn't contain soy?

    I saw the mint chocolate and sadly I am intolerant to something in the processing of chocolate so I steer clear of it most times :(
