Post Workout Protein

For the last couple of years I have read about how we should all get some protein within 30 minutes of exercise because that is the time our muscles are most ready to absorb it. I am usually pretty good about it and have gotten more choosy with my brands over the years. The Paleo thing brings up a question though: since all the protein powders I've found are either dairy based or soy based, what are all of you doing?

I've been using a Whey Protein Isolate for a while now and I like it. It only has 2g of sugar in it. I just bought some of the Isopure which has only 1g. I know they are both dairy and therefore not Paleo but if one of the biggest reasons for the diet is to avoid the sugar, they seem to have that box just about checked. Am I wrong? I am rationalizing that since I don't drink I can be all zany and allow myself some refined dairy protein here and there. I am a wild man. We all see that.

  1. I have not tried these myself but here is a pea based protein powder (http://www.trueprotein.com/Product_Details.aspx?cid=22&pid=6816) and a rice based protein powder (http://www.trueprotein.com/Product_Details.aspx?cid=22&pid=6833).

  2. Rob, this article has some limited info about lower absorption rates of those other proteins,

Colin, I don't know what Paleo folks do, but I always thought dairy+whey peri-workout worked great. I asked this entire group specifically about what the harm of whey was for those who weren't allergic, but never got a response. Maybe someone will revisit.

  3. Eat meat Colin. Canned Tuna - entire tiny can is 32g protein

Duck - it's a red meat. Sold precooked at Costco. Delicious.

I prep food before Oly and then eat it when I get home. It's been a tough issue for us lifters. DT and Doogie drank organic milk. I know others that drink raw milk.

Protein shakes certainly are easier. Collin had the same issue, might want to ask how he got around it.

If you find a good ideas, lemme know! Good luck

  5. I actually found this recipe someone posted during the last paleo challenge. I wish I could remember to give them credit. I haven't tried it but it sounds pretty good!

1/4 c. pumpkin (canned stuff ok, not pumpkie pie filling)
    1/2 c. coconut milk
    2 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 a banana
3 raw eggs (wash shells before you crack them)

You can also throw some avocado in it

Blend together. Add some ginger or more cinnamon to taste.

  6. The macronutrient content of that shake is garbage. Per FitDay, I'm getting 562 cals, 44g fat, 26g carbs, 23g protein.

In an almost equivalent amount of calories of 2 c. whole milk + 2 scoops whey protein powder (I'm using mine for example, ON Double Chocolate) there are 533 cals, 18g fat, 28g carbs, 64g protein. Use skim milk or water and the macros look even better (if you're trying to lean out/lose weight).

I don't think the magical properties of the paleo diet are enough to overcome the clear advantage to using the latter as your peri-workout nutrition.

  8. I'm confused, why are you blogging on here, Joel? I know you represent the devils advocate of paleo, but since we all are DOING paleo, your methods do not apply and quite honestly, are discouraging.

  9. Seems like you're easily confused. Why do you think I represent the devil's advocate of paleo? I've posted on here and said many times that paleo is mostly the way I eat and a very good base for a diet.

Mostly I argue for more moderation and introduction of other items that I think can improve health, performance and compliance.

The fact is that paleo + dairy is recommended by me and many others who these bloggers are following (Robb Wolf, CF, CF Football, Mark Sisson, etc) for the exact situation this poster asked about (LBM gains). Why do you call paleo+dairy "my methods"? It's really their methods.

Should I just STFU and not share what I learned from, among other places CF and WCCF because it might offend and/or teach something to Jonina? Or should I share with a community that I benefited and learned from as well and challenge beliefs and misconceptions so that we may both learn?

  10. I feel like interjecting here... The point of the competition is strict paleo... I assume this is why people are frustrated with the DT comments.

I enjoy the DT comments because it is useful information for going forward. (I do quite a bit of research myself) I am not competing this round but I am trying something that is basically ramped up strict paleo... it is not sustainable for long periods of time... and it is really proving to be more than challenging even for short periods of time. I am willing to try things that may not be optimal for short periods of time so I can see what happens. Plus, any of this stuff beats my previous nutritional standards.

If you know DT at all you know that he is a very sweet and supportive person. I can assure you that he is not trying to sabotage anything.
