  1. This is a good guide. I deviate a little by using regular extra virgin olive oil when cooking with olive oil, and I use the organic cold pressed stuff for use in dressings and other items that I am not heating. I cook with bacon, coconut, and olive oil, and I tend to prefer the first two over olive oil when cooking, except, when looking for the olive oil to help flavor the food.

I like all of the food guides found in the site.

Ash, want to get some elk heart for Maddie tomorrow morning?

  2. Glad you like the post and guides :) Just be careful when heating olive oil not to cook on a high heat as it will damage the oil. I steer clear since cooking and knowing what temperature you are using can be a bit tricky.

  3. Diane, your site rocks, I'm sad it took me this long to find it.

    I have a two questions.

    1. Grapeseed oil, I see it's under the don't eat portion of saturated fats. I unfortunately use this in baking b/c it's taste free, I also use coconut oil for baking and I'm guessing I should switch to that. Any other suggestions on oils for baking that isn't ultra expensive like nut oils?

    2. Quinoa - is this considered paleo because it's not technically a grain? I saw your had a post about it promoting it but am always confused about this one. I would love if your answer is yes because I've been dreaming of making oatmeal out of quinoa with fresh orange and coconut milk.

    Thanks you again

  4. Hi there- commenting on my blog will get faster responses- I actually happened to come back here and saw your questions!

    1. Grape seed oil... it's not saturated, it's unsaturated. Use coconut oil or butter (if you tolerate it). I presume you're not baking too often so occasional use is not a big deal.

    2. Quinoa- it's a grain/seed... it contains anti-nutrients called saponins:

My post on quinoa is from my pre-paleo days... I didn't delete those posts because they are part of my journey and my story. If you want to eat some quinoa, do it. Don't stress about it. Do it once and see how you feel. Then avoid it for the mostpart... Gluten is the devil, but other grains, legumes, etc can come in here or there randomly. I just don't really think most of them taste so great without a ton of doctoring-up. I bet you could make some coconut milk pudding with chopped green apples and cinnamon and that would be pretty darned tasty :)

Anytime. Hit me up on the blog or on facebook.com/balancedbites

    :)
