It's the first thing I took care of in my bedroom... making a cave is much more simple than you think. Yes, now you're eating this crazy Paleo, Paleo-Zone or Paleoish diet and now I'm telling you it is imperative for better results that you make a cave. I'm totally not joking here. I know we have all heard it one place or another... Sleep is important and we should be getting 7-8 hours of it unless we are busy running from that mammoth sabertooth tiger. Good, dark, quiet and restful sleep is pretty darn good for you. Apparently embracing your inner caveman will help you lose body fat, recover quicker, look beautiful and be able to leap buildings in a single bound. To make your room darker, try these tips:
1. Install some blackout shades. You can find an array of blackout shades and curtains online. Installing both will give you the best effect. Home Depot has super cheap paper blackout shades that are peel and stick. I have used craft foam and black duct tape for the same results. I then overlay that with cheap blackout curtains from Overstock.com.
2. Get a groovy new clock. I found one that you can set on DARK so it doesn't illuminate unless you wave your hand in front of it. Not only does this make the room much darker, but the fact that it comes on when I get out of bed in the middle of the night helps me see my way to the door. My legs are really happy with fewer bruises.
3. Learn to set your TV timer. If you fall asleep watching TV, set it on a timer. Don't understand your remote? Do an Internet search for your brand of TV/remote and you should be able to download your instruction booklet.
4. Black duct tape is your cave friend. When little spurts of light show up plug them up with small bits of duct tape.
The end result, when all your measures have been taken, should be that even in the daytime if you close your bedroom door and pull the curtains you won't be able to see our hand a few feet in front of you.
CONGRATULATIONS! You have now constructed your first cave!
If you don't believe me on all this, I don't blame you but, we have some pretty cool people doing it along with us, see here:
Dr. Oz agrees.
Robb Wolf has a take on this here.
Mark Sisson has thoughts on the matter.
Even Gweneth is getting in on the action.
For those of you who have already darkened your room, do you have any tips to share with the group?
Happy Darkening!

I ate Asparagus, bell pepper scramble and some avocado for breakfast. (I also had a small handful of almonds)
Lunch was my Paleo White Chicken Chili (YUM!)
Dinner was salmon with a small spinach salad.
J-Po,
ReplyDeleteThis post is AWESOME. I desperately need to make myself a cave and perhaps that will be my weekend project. Maybe I will make it and then post some really black pictures of it up here...
Welcome to the gang!
I thought this was Drew posting b/c it's funny but true. I call my bedroom the bear cave b/c it's dark and I love it that way. Though, a friend recently got me a new alarm clock and it's so bright, I have to place something over it each night. I need to get a new one.
ReplyDeleteOr you could try putting it under your bed :)
