Calling in the Troops

I need help. As a few of you know, I have a brutal schedule right now that is not only cutting into my sleep but not boding well for three squares a day. I am forced to eat whatever I can stick in my lab coat and snarf down in the few minutes I get throughout the day. I rarely have access to a microwave or fridge. Scheduling time to eat is simply not an option as I am at the mercy of my attending physician. Labor laws, human rights, blah, blah, blah.......doesn't work, don't even go there. SO, I need some advice. I am about sick to death of nuts and jerky. I have tried Lara bars but am trying not to eat fruit for the first six weeks, plus I think they are kind of yucky. Here are things that I have eaten on the fly but am hoping that some of you pros can perhaps add to the mix of protein dense, nutritious, non-perishables that have worked for you:

nuts
jerky
lara bars
olives
raw veggies
root vegetable chips (I know, not the best choice)

I was having some ridiculous progress the first couple of weeks of the challenge and then I started this stupid schedule and feel like I have come to a screeching halt. Due to the combination of box hours/schedule I was only able to make it there ONCE last week!!!! My next question: What exercises can I do at home to (hopefully) at least maintain some of the progress I've made since joining WCCF. This fucking sucks.

  1. You can always do pushups and squats at home. Do you like your job? Work is only and ends to the mean. Sometimes long hours are warranted, but long hours being the norm I feel is very unhealthy.

  2. I'm in school right now so this is just an ends to the mean. Five more months and I will be free and will NOT be working these hours by choice. I agree, long hours and overnights are not a healthy lifestyle. Thanks

  3. If it would help ... i have a little cooler you can have (easy things to pack: hard boiled eggs, salad, anything you don't have to take the time to heat up).

Also, someone sent me this link a while ago ... but the gym started carrying some of this stuff too: http://www.stevesoriginal.com/store. Have you tried their granola?

Somewhere along the line I read about a gluten free protein shake. Anybody have recommendations? (BTW been listening to Robb Wolf podcasts and was a little surprised that he doesn't completely freak out when people supplement with whey protein shakes.) Wonder if Justin could give you some insight on the OPT products: http://www.optstore.blogspot.com/.

Maybe invest in a large thermos and take soup with you?

I'm hoping folks give you great ideas ... next semester will be uber busy for me as well, and I would love to glean from ya'lls ideas.

(In trying to find the protein shake info ran across a recommendation to eat baby food sweet potatoes (only ingredient = sweet potatoes) ... sounds disgusting, but convenient!)

    Wishing you the best.

Oh and are you maintaining ground? Some seasons are harder to advance than others ... but I would call it a victory if you didn't loose too much of ground gained during this time! Wishing you the best of success!!!

  4. this might be gross to you, but i eat tuna out of the can sometimes. still, you would need a can opener. i've also been known to pack chicken drumsticks in plastic baggies and carry them around, nosh when hungry. if you're big on refrigeration that won't work but i'm ok with them being room temp (since i hate cold food).
sorry, i don't have better ideas. good luck!
