Well, as I said originally, the weekend is my trial. I could put things in perspective and make excuses, but I did cheat. Two tequilas and two glasses of red wine, also a piece of fried chicken. I found that the one glass of wine Friday night was a nice relaxer, I nursed it for about 2 hours. Slow sips, and enjoying the flavor vs. gulping down FTW. On the other hand, I showed major restraint in a lot of other areas where normally I would’ve essentially motor boated a bowl of freshly baked biscuits. Saturday night I had attended a small get together for a friend leaving town, where fellow crossfitter Skibbie decided he wanted a large pizza, which was placed in front of my face. I ate none of it, none. Go Dole.
Sunday night I had a thanksgiving practice/fauxgiving/friendsgiving whatever you want to call it. The invite said “show up at 4:30 PROMPT,” which in my mind means “Turkey around 5.” I planned my eating schedule around that. Around 6:30 as I’m devouring turkey and ham, I realize that popeyes drumstick I had before probably wasn’t as paleo as my empty stomach perceived it to be, but it did help me avoid biscuits, sugared up sweet potatoes, creamy this, buttery-shiny that.
As for snacks I’ve discovered the ease of baking chicken legs and at 6 for around $3.50 from Jewel, they’re a steal. I’ve had a problem with filling up on meat, and forgetting veggies, which I’ve tried to overcome by making my stews and soups as incredibly vegetable heavy, and adding beef, chicken, or pork on top. I’ve made the mistake of overdoing the beef once or twice, but I’ll learn how to do it properly. I also remembered my Costco membership, which allowed me to buy a ton of meat, and freeze it. I’d prefer fresh, but my budget has been overblown with the amount I’m eating lately. Another "snack" I've been enjoying at the end of the night is decaf-flavored teas, once again, slowly enjoyed with both smell and taste allows me to stretch it out as a real treat. That or 3 or 4 raspberries.
Lastly, I want to mention that nothing here is set in stone. I walked in to this challenge with the mindset that paleo substitutions for sweets, breads, cakes, muffins and all were bad. As I was working through Friday, I got an excited phone call from my girlfriend about a recipe for paleo pancakes; pancakes and breakfasts being one of the few times we get to spend a lot of time together without interruptions. You have to pick your battles, and the fact that she was going out of her way to support me by looking up a substitution specifically for my diet was awesome. I’m lucky to have a roommate who’s not a dick, like some of yours apparently!
ALSO: We never posted our pictures, mine are below, please excuse my scruffiness and terrible posture.

Congrats Dole! And don't beat yourself up as red wine and tequila in moderation are in fact paleo. I was pretty happy with my paleo progress and I certainly was not afraid of the weekend glass(es) of wine. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteShare that paleo pancake recipe!

3. Fill spoonful with batter onto skillet.
4. When bubbles appear flip pancakes and cook other side.
I used some fresh berries on top sparingly, remember to get no unsweetened sauce or make your own.
Thank you for posting your photos Dole, I do know you by face, but I think it's an important part of the challenge.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing missing in this challenge vs. the last one is that I do not know most of the people in this challenge and there are no photos, so it takes that personal connection out for me. 3% fat loss on me is different then 3% fat loss on Dole, etc. Something for you to all think of. I respect the fact that you might not want your face posted online, crop it out and the post them up. People will be more inspired in the end. Food for thought.
Who brought popeyes to your fauxgiving party? That person knows whats up, I like that.
