I am not really interested in posting me in my skivvies online. Especially since Hipp is actually my name, and I am self involved enough to assume people google me constantly and may stumble upon this site. But in the interest of putting names with faces and folks getting to know who's who here is my face from the pictures last week. I am biting my lips because I'm very cold and was just rudely pinched all over. I am also without my glasses, which I usually wear.
I hate having my picture taken, picking the potatoes out of my borscht yesterday at lunch was annoying and stupid but not hard, and I was inspired by the Gang Round 1-ers so I started eating a la the whole30 rules before last sunday. My roommates (I have 3) are super supportive or could care less. One went so far as to say, "You're a lot less crazy since you started this weird diet thing" so its nice to know I'm not the only one who is psyched for the normalization of insulin levels.
To date I have missed two things (1) Convenience. I am sick and tired of prepping all my own meals. Sucks. (2) Gin. I never realized just how much I loved Gin until it went away.
But I did hit triple digits on yesterday's front squats so I'm counting that as BIG WIN, which feels awesome.
1. I'll be able to keep an eye out for you now, thanks for posting.
ReplyDelete2. Great job on the squats, way to hit the high numbers!
3. I understand the missing certain alcohols, I love bourbon, but think about it this way. Only good can come from not having that drink at the end of the day, physically and mentally. Right?
Way to go hitt'in the TD on FS seems your hard work and dedication are paying off! I also miss my alcohol, Lindemans Framboise beer float are delicious (don't knock it till you try it) however, on the plus side, I don't get as many sidelong looks. So there's that.
ReplyDelete@Dole "Only good can come from not having that drink at the end of the day, physically and mentally. Right?"
ReplyDeleteIncorrect. There are many studies extolling the value of moderate alcohol consumption.

Key is moderation (1-3 drinks/day). Giving up alcohol is fine, but I'd rather live longer and healthier.
Moderation is 1-3 drinks a day????
ReplyDeleteRead the research????
ReplyDeleteHmmm, where do you get your research? In the medical world, 3 drinks a day would be considered alcoholism. I'm sure you can find a research article that says 10 drinks a day is ok too. that's the thing with research...
ReplyDeleteHipp, I think we sort of met last night, but I was in a zone and didn't ask you your name, I was asking for the green band. Sorry that was rude of me.
ReplyDeleteGlad you posted your photo, now for the others, come on! :)
Thanks, everyone!
ReplyDeleteJoel, gin isn't gone from my life forever, I promise, but spending some time without it has definitely helped me to appreciate it more. And helped to clarify that if Gin and Tequila were both falling out of my freezer at the same time I should save the Gin first.
Ashley, we did sort-of meet, but you weren't rude you were just focused - and sort of adorably mammal-like poking through the hole in the wall like that
@Holly
ReplyDeleteMy source is pubmed. Also Robb Wolf (lol just kidding).
You want to nitpick the "3 drinks". Ok. Whatever. I was advocating moderation. Sorry I insulted your sensibilities instilled by our fine "medical world".
I was recommending to Dole (who I know) to read up on what amounts that are used in a myriad of studies that show health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, some of which are listed as links in that article. I also assume that most people interested in nutrition (you are all posting on a blog about nutrition, ya?) know how to use Pubmed and find a number of other studies for themselves.
The range of drinks/day is debatable, but "1-3" is not an unreasonable summary. Maybe "1-2" would be better. Ok, fine. Whatever. I also didn't define a "drink", but in those studies it's usually less than what you or I would call a drink.
Your comment (you being someone I do not know) about research is condescending. Do you disagree with the wide body of literature about the health benefits of moderate alcohol intake? If yes, show some studies, not just a logical fallacy blind appeal to authority "in the medical community" or logical fallacy goal post shift of saying studies can show anything.
If you don't disagree with the research, how do you justify excluding something with known or suspected/correlated health benefits?
@Hipp
Gin is delicious. Plymouth or Hendrick's are both in my regular rotation.
I know that personally, yes after reading the article posted by DT, I feel mentally a lot better after an evening of NOT drinking vs. consuming. The article portions out servings as 12 oz beer, 1.5oz hard liquor or 5oz of wine. I'm at the point where generally 2 servings will put me in a jolly mood, and anything over will put me in an unhappy place the next day.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Potsdam sucks.
@Dole, of course it's fine if your personal preference is to not drink & it makes you feel worse.
ReplyDeleteI guess I was speaking more generally. If one chooses not to drink at all, that person is avoiding doing something easy that may lead to better health.
If you don't have control/moderation problems or some other medical or personal issue that precludes alcohol consumption, randomly eliminating alcohol from your diet seems like a mistake.
I am an overeater and a binge drinker... I have never been good with the "in moderation"... so I see where DT is going with this. Some are OK with the benefits of some alcohol in moderation. For me it just is not an option.
ReplyDeleteCutting things out completely is the only way that works with me... I have to cut things out... avoid them when I have a severe craving and then when the obsession has passed I can finally have these things in moderation.
Seriously.... there is a reason why I was over 240# last year and I feel no different this year. I have to have blood tests, body fat tests and weights recorded so that I can believe there is any difference. I have to stay conscience of everything so that I don't develop an eating disorder. It is HARD and I think this is the best process for me. I share my struggles because I know that there are some that will read this and understand... that they are in the same place... It is OK. Know your obstacles and overcome them and if you ever need to talk just let me know.
Getting back to the friendliness that started at the top of this post, Hipp I appreciated your post and suddenly got paranoid about what I was blogging! There is apparently one other Jonina Hernandez out there in the world, and I'm the active one according to my latest "Jonina Hernandez" Google search! haha. Anyway, my pics were horrible and as my mom said, it looks like I had cheeks glued onto my cheeks, so not even just a face shot from me. Maybe I'll post a pic of what I look like in real life so you can pick me out of the crowd.
ReplyDeleteJoel, the link you have and the owner of the site David J Hanson is funded by the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. I wouldn't trust his word. Word!
ReplyDeleteDoogie, funded studies do not mean the science is untrue. Many of the studies I looked up were published in major journals.
ReplyDeleteI know you don't use pubmed or look up studies, but the information is there if you ever want to look it up.
