Yesterday I made the mistake of mentioning the Paleo challenge to my roommates. They have now made it their mission to make this challenge a little more difficult. I awoke this morning to the smell of my favorite breakfast (Iced Chai w/ half and half with home made pancakes and syrup) sitting beside my bed. The kitchen is now stocked with all my favorite non-paleo foods.
Needless to say I was a little grumpy as I left for work after throwing out the pancakes and Iced Chai. I am going to exact my revenge by antiquing them with almond meal. thus the great Paleo prank war has been born.
PS.
For those of you unfamiliar with the art of antiquing:
Nim, I find that using confectioners sugar gets better coverage than flour.
ReplyDeletethanks for the pro-tip. Also, remind me not to get in a prank war w/ you.
ReplyDeleteSorry your roommates are jerks. Mine have been pretty great so far. One went so far as to fry my breakfast eggs* separately so they would be butter-free this morning.
ReplyDelete*slow scrambled with arugula, in case you were curious
My roomie is a pencil thin, well-toned, ultra-health nut with a serious problem with all things crossfit and paleo. She thinks both are ridiculous and I can't mention either without getting a semi-lecture about how she has been healthy her whole life and I should be following what she does.
ReplyDeleteThough healthy... she always is stocked with (otherwise healthy) non-paleo food. It makes me anxious because I know my obsession with food... though I would never take her food.
The past few days I have had a serious problem with ice cream... I have stopped at least once a day to get a small (still shouldn't) ice cream of some sort. Off the wagon... ugh.
I can't imagine how hard this would be with a roommate, esp some skinny b!@tch that likes to lecture. Tall Dave (aka Paleo Dave) and I have an extra room if anyone needs an escape or fears retaliation with a new creative way of antiquing
ReplyDeleteJ-Po, maybe there is a middle ground between paleo and your roomie's method? Maybe both have good aspects to bring to the diet table? Just food for thought.
ReplyDeleteAlso, in my experience, "on the wagon" and "off the wagon" are destructive mindsets. The absolute-style approach is one of the reasons I'm against "paleo". (I realize some do not take this approach.) I agree with those people. Why not just take a more moderated approach if it's more sustainable for you? (I.e. personally I am more apt to stay "good" on a diet that is 95% strict than 100%. Want a cookie? Have a cookie, but don't make it an obsession.) To me, and again referring to the absolutists, paleo smacks of the type of obsession over detail (with regard to food) that has also hurt people I have known in my life with problems such as anorexia or bulemia. To me, a moderated approach is healthier and less likely to lead to such obsession. Just my opinion. Best of luck in your continued journey.

DT!
ReplyDeleteMiss you man! Well I have integrated everything that she has suggested minus the severely non-paleo (grains & etc.). She has been instrumental to me reinventing my health so I give her serious props there. Problem is that I found something that works for me and it deviates from what she does.
Good point on the "wagon"... I am really hard on myself. Usually I am really good at just eating whatever the craving is (and usually finding out I don't really want it anyways) and suppressing the urge. I think I figured out the obsession today. I haven't worked out in a couple of weeks! So, I got to it... WOD on! Afterwards I felt better and had no immediate cravings... no cravings all day actually. WEIRD I know :)
