I have a question: Can we really eat bacon?! I am finding conflicting information. I didn't know what "Paleo" book to purchase and I got the one by Loren Cordain which I found quite hokey. I bought it awhile back and am now hearing a lot about this Robb Wolfe fellow. Is it worth throwing down for his book or are the principles the same? Thanks for opening yourself up to an onslaught of questions(probably mostly from me)!
ReplyDeleteHolly, get the best bacon you can find, meaning nitrate free and gluten free and you are okay. That pretty much can be said for all sausages as well.
ReplyDeleteLoren Cordain was Robb Wolf's mentor, but I really like what he says. Start listening to his pod casts, which play Tuesday night or you can play them directly from his website after Tuesday night. I just purchased his paleo solution and really like it, you can borrow it from me if you would like once I'm done.
Cordain's books are very strict on eating meats high in saturated fats. It is inconclusive that meats high in saturated fats have an effect on one's health. Follow my sister's advice on bacon and sausage and you will be fine. I have ate bacon three days in a row with my breakfast, plus pork belly, and pork sausage. Hail to the PIG!
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I LOVE bacon! I had bacon for breakfast and pork ribs for lunch, Hail to the PIG indeed! I did have a salad with no pig for dinner, very boring. Thanks guys! Let me know when your done with your book Ashley, I wouldn't mind taking a peek to see how it compares. Later!
ReplyDeleteI also had bacon for breakfast. Its just so SATISFYING.
ReplyDeleteHolly, I won't be back in the box til thursday but I have a copy of Robb's book if you want to borrow it. Let me know and I can leave it for you.
I had bacon as well! Applewood smoked from TJs. Fast cook time and delicious! I too was concerned, but Sheena also gave bacon the thumbs up. Just look for nitrate free ... And no added sugar (like maple syrup - sad).
ReplyDeleteI'm a big believer that bacon and a wide variety of nitrate-free sausage is the secret to tasty paleo meals with endless variety. Gene's Sausage Shop in Lincoln Square (about 1/2 mile north if the box) is a fantastic source of all of the above. Most is made right in the store, or their other location on Belmont. Their breakfast sausage, Italian sausage (both sweet and spicy kinds), Sheboygen brats, bacon and gypsy ham are my favorites and make my list almost weekly. They also have a good variety of grass fed beef, lamb, Amish chicken and basically everything else.
ReplyDeleteyum! Im going to sneak in a visit to Gene's soon!
ReplyDeleteAlso a note, all of gene's sausages are gluten free. I was told by one of the butchers that everything made in house is gluten free there. Gene's rocks.
